Why Americans Don’t Like Soccer?

Kategori: Football,GeneralCeyla Kütükoğlu @ 2:30 am

handeggBarrack Obama, The President of United States, has announced that USA will be bidding for 2018 or 2022 World Cup. So here is the biggest question. Why? Even though we think that soccer is an activity which affected the whole world and almost become a religion, it is obvious that in the USA where sport is lived 24 for seven, soccer is doomed. Despite all efforts, marketing activities, success stories, soccer is still an unpleasant event for Americans. Even World Cup 1994, American Women’s Championship in 1999 World Cup (which they hosted), Mia Hamm and David Beckham – the latter was the final effort- couldn’t change the fact. For Americans what we called football is called soccer which I think it’s derived from the word sucker.

So why Americans don’t like the beloved sport considered the joy of life by their antecedents Europeans and the reason of existence by their neighbors South Americans? Here are the reasons.

Kategori: Sports,TennisCeyla Kütükoğlu @ 7:36 am

Clay Court

With the beginning of the spring, the number of people who does sport and decide to do sport has increased. Meanwhile for the people who are not willing to do sport but just want to watch, there are lots of opportunities in this season. Spring is the probably most fruitful season of the year for the sports events. In this season we can watch clay court season in tennis, playoffs in NBA and Champions League, UEFA Cup semifinals and finals in football. I would like to start my spring predictions with tennis.

The first quarter of the year ended with Miami tournament, and my favorite season – the clay court- season has just started. Clay court season which starts with this week’s Monte Carlo tournament and ends with second Grand Slam of the year- Roland Garros, it’s expected to be exciting but yet predictable. This period includes big tournaments like Monte Carlo, Rome Masters, Madrid Masters and Roland Garros, and some small tournaments like Barcelona, Estoril and the new Serbian tournament owned by Djokovic family, Belgrade Open. As we can see the Hamburg tournament is replaced with formerly indoor tournament Madrid Open. In the WTA most exciting tournaments are Rome Open, Madrid Open and Roland Garros.

In many sports besides regular season matches several different exhibition matches are played. The All Star Game in NBA is an example of traditionalized exhibition match. Also in football, mostly for the farewell of famous player, best players in the World play exhibition matches. Generally these matches are played in same conditions, same rules and same type of fields with regular matches. In this respect tennis differentiates from other sports in terms of exhibition matches.

First of all, tennis has a special tour just consist of exhibition matches. Black Rock Tour, is a tour for exhibition matches of former tennis legends. Besides Black Rock tour every year many different kind of exhibition matches are played in order to promote the sport and draw attention. In tennis, many of the exhibition matches are played in different and weird places and with different rules. Most of them are played without any rule because they are mostly just a game of tennis rather than a match. Super Bowl – Return on Investments

Kategori: Media,NFL,Sports MarketingCeyla Kütükoğlu @ 5:30 pm

Super Bowl Ads The 24-18 victory of Pittsburg Steelers’ on Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII which played in Sunday was the one of the greatest match in history of Super Bowl. So who cares? Of course many NFL fans care, but when we look at the rest all we can see there is only one thing that everybody talks about and makes analyzes about: the Ads!!

For American marketers and advertisers, Super Bowl evolved to be an extended band of ad in which a match is broadcasted in the reaming time. When you search for Super Bowl, you came across with ad analyses, video sites publishing the ads and many ad comments sites. You can find after 10 minutes even the score of this important and interesting game.

In my previous article, I mentioned that the 30 second spot of Super Bowl costs 3 million dollars. That means the worth of one Super Bowl ad is increased 13% despite the economic downturn. According to number revealed after the game, the broadcast channel of the game, NBC, has gained 206 million dollars just from the game. I would like to make a comparison with Turkish market. The revenue of Super Bowl is the same as the entire revenue of outdoor advertising in Turkey in one year. In total 32 advertiser advertised with at least 3 different ads to Super Bowl. And %85 of them paid 3 million dollars ,the maximum amount of money, per ad. NBC started to sell Super Bowl ads back in October 2008 and the bidding continued to the last minute before the game start. Last minute ad sales are also very common in Turkish TV advertising market specifically for sports events.

So, for advertiser how much is the return on investment, considering that they are investing so heavily to a single match?
